THE ROLE

The primary role of the Senior Metallurgist is to provide technical leadership and metallurgical support to plant operations by monitoring and analyzing plant performance, leading process optimization and metallurgical test work, troubleshooting process issues, and ensuring sound metallurgical accounting and data management.

The role is responsible for driving improvements in gold recovery, throughput, process stability and operating efficiency while providing technical guidance and development to junior metallurgical staff.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Technical & Process Support:

  • Lead metallurgical monitoring, plant surveys, sampling campaigns and technical evaluations across the gold processing circuit.
  • Monitor and analyze key plant performance indicators including throughput, gold recovery, grind size, reagent consumption, residence time, carbon performance and gold losses.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis of metallurgical and process performance issues and develop appropriate corrective actions.
  • Identify, develop and implement process optimization initiatives aimed at improving gold recovery, throughput, plant stability and operating efficiency.
  • Design, coordinate and evaluate metallurgical test work programmed and plant trials, and translate findings into practical process improvements.
  • Provide technical guidance for Operations on process control, operating parameters, ore variability and optimization of key processing areas.

Metallurgical Accounting & Data Management:

  • Lead daily, weekly and monthly metallurgical accounting activities, including mass balancing, gold reconciliation, production reporting and inventory management.
  • Monitor and reconcile gold movements through the processing circuit and investigate significant variances, biases and unexplained gold losses.
  • Ensure sampling systems, sampling protocols and analytical procedures provide representative, accurate and repeatable data for metallurgical accounting and process evaluation.
  • Maintain and continuously improve metallurgical accounting systems, databases, dashboards and reporting tools.
  • Validate metallurgical data and laboratory results to ensure data integrity, accuracy and compliance with QA/QC requirements.

Technical Analysis & Reporting:

  • Analyze metallurgical test work, plant performance and process data to identify trends, variances, constraints and optimization opportunities.
  • Lead metallurgical investigations and root cause analyses into recovery losses, throughput constraints, excessive reagent consumption and other process performance deviations.
  • Prepare high-quality daily, weekly and monthly metallurgical reports, technical reports and presentations highlighting performance, risks, opportunities and recommended actions.
  • Develop and track continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring that implemented changes deliver measurable and sustainable improvements in plant performance.
  • Provide metallurgical input into production forecasting, budgeting, business planning and development of plant performance assumptions.

Cost control and Budgeting:

  • Develop annual operating and capital budgets for the Process department.
  • Prepare quarterly forecasts and track performance
  • Analyze and report cost variances, identifying drivers and recommending corrective actions
  • Track and optimize key metallurgical cost drivers, including reagents, grinding media, power, consumables and laboratory costs.

Safety & Sustainability Expectations:

  • Provide visible safety leadership by promoting safe work practices and ensuring that metallurgical test work, sampling activities, plant trials and process changes are appropriately risk assessed and conducted in accordance with site safety requirements.
  • Intervene where necessary to ensure the safety of others in the workplace and consistently demonstrate a positive example of safe and responsible behavior.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Mineral Processing, or related field.
  • Sound technical knowledge of gold processing, including crushing, grinding, cyanidation, CIL and elution.
  • Sound understanding of metallurgical accounting principles, sampling, mass balancing, gold inventory measurement and production reconciliation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel. Familiar with data analysis tools (e.g., PI, Centric) is an advantage.
  • Good communication and reporting skills.
  • Ability to communicate both in English and French.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and adapt in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
