THE ROLE
The Opencast Mining Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all aspects of day-to-day operations in the open pit mining area to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective production. Reporting to the Production Manager, this role is accountable for driving operational excellence through strong safety leadership, technical expertise, effective scheduling, and team development. This role will require an incumbent who has extensive operational experience in open pit operations. An understanding of fleet maintenance, load and haul, and exposure to technical services, would be advantageous. The successful candidate will be expected to be out in the pit, challenging the status quo, identifying opportunities for improvement, and building a united team that is focused on Endeavour’s vision and mission, all while ensuring that all employees go home safely at the end of the day..
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Safety Management
- Comply and Promote SGO’s established health & safety and environmental policies.
- Ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and implementing safe work procedures.
- Ensuring compliance with SGO’s fatigue management procedures.
- Hold all levels accountable for meeting leading indicator targets (Take 5, Hazard Reporting, Pre-use Inspection, VFL, PTOs) from Team Leaders & Above.
- Comply with hydrocarbon spill management, and fauna dead reporting.
- Comply with Occupational Health and Hygiene (OHH) protocol and recommendation
- Comply with the yearly annual medical checkup procedure.
Technical Accountabilities
- Managing and optimizing the use of mining equipment, including shovels, trucks, and other support equipment, to ensure efficient operation and minimize downtime
- Oversee and manage all technical aspects of open pit mining including loading and hauling ore and waste management.
- Collaborate with technical services (geology, planning, and engineering) to optimize pit design, mining methods, and material movement.
- Ensure efficient use of equipment and resources to meet production targets.
- Implement and monitor performance metrics to drive operational improvements.
- Managing production to ensure we ‘do it right the first time’, maximizing efficient operation of equipment, ensuring we are using the right tools for the job, and identifying risks and mitigating them before there is a problem
- Ensuring weekly/monthly ore and waste delivery targets are met
- Utilizing the appropriate systems (including safety, production, quality, performance reporting) to ensure processes are in place and are operating effectively in all areas of open pit mining operations.
- Directing safe and efficient mining activities, looking for opportunities to increase productivity and reduce costs on a regular basis.
- Ensuring the necessary people are available and properly trained to meet planned future requirements
- Contributing to the wider effectiveness of the Sabodala-Massawa Operation.
Scheduling Accountabilities
- Achieving production targets through effective planning, monitoring, and optimization of the load and haul process.
- Developing and implementing short- and long-term plans for load and haul activities, coordinating with other departments like drilling and blasting.
- Manage short- and medium-term production schedules aligned with life-of-mine plans.
- Coordinate resources to ensure timely execution of mining plans.
- Monitor daily, weekly, and monthly production progress, adjusting schedules as necessary to meet targets.
- Work closely with maintenance and logistics teams to minimize downtime and maximize equipment availability.
Staff Development
- Setting and monitoring KPIs, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback to direct reports.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing mining operations team.
- Identify training and development need to enhance skills and promote career growth.
- Foster a team-oriented environment with strong communication and performance feedback mechanisms.
- Participate in workforce planning, recruitment, and succession planning.
- Developing the practical, technical, and leadership capabilities of the production team.
- Leading, motivating and developing the leadership team (superintendent, supervisor, lead hand). Transfer of knowledge and mentoring is an essential part of this position.
- Provide regular communications and leadership to all operators and staff on issues and overall performance of the business
- Ensure that all staff are appropriately trained and competent to safely and efficiently carry out their roles.
- Address performance by way of regular meetings with staff on an individual as well as on a team basis to set objectives, evaluate performance and provide the necessary feedback and support.
- Continuously evaluate and improve own and team’s performance.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive experience in open pit mining operations preferably in load and haul operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent role.
- Proficiency in computer software and systems used in mine operations.
- Strong knowledge of mining methods, equipment, and operational best practices.
- Proven track record in safety leadership and regulatory compliance.
- Competent in operational reporting systems.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
