THE ROLE

Reporting to the Senior Mine Planning Engineer, the Mine Planning Engineer is responsible to provide operational expertise ensuring the short and medium mine plans are prepared in a structured, accurate and timely manner.

KEY RESPONSABILITIES

Mine Planning

  • Provide monthly mine planning aligned to the Long Term Plan guidance. (Plan to show amount of ROM to be mined at what grade and cost).
  • Provide the optimisation of pit stage designs, assess and manage the mineability of the 12 month Rolling Plan. 
  • Monitoring the implementation of mine plans by ensuring that actual loading, hauling and dumping are done according to plan. 
  • Prepare a schedule for waste dumping (where waste material must go and in what quantities).
  • Prepare a month-end report; showing what was planned for against what was mined. 
  • Ensure that mining is done to specification/plan/design. 
  • Ensure that plans are communicated and understood by relevant parties. 
  • Ensure that whatever is planned for will enhance performance. 
  • Ensure that planning is done in a way that wastage will be minimized. 
  • Ensure that planning is done in compliance with legislation, regulations and standards. 
  • Ensure that the required outputs are maintained and monitored for continuous improvement. 
  • Monitor the activities of the blasting section in order to control wall limits. 
  • Lead planning for mining, crusher feed, ore stockpiling and waste dumping using the mine planning scheduling and design tools.
  • Provide data and justifications in appropriate formats to site Management to support mine plans which have been generated.  
  • Co-ordinate inputs from Geology, Processing, Mining, Business and Management as required.
  • Ensure development and operational schedules are aligned with current Budget and the Long Term Plan.

Design, Analysis, Evaluation

  • Assist with pit optimisations to generate optimal pit shells.  
  • Assist with the creation of pit stage and bench development designs, and ensure any changes remain aligned to the Long-Term Plan.
  • Assist with the creation of waste dump stage and development designs and ensure any changes remain aligned to the Long-Term Plan.
  • Assist with the creation of haul cycle time datasets for use with mine planning software and ensure that regular validation and calibration against actual cycle time data is performed.
  • Provide technical support to Technical Services, Geology and Mine Operations where required.
  • Evaluate mine development and operational options.

Compliance

  • Promote and adhere to internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Document workflows and processes and ensure auditable processes exist for budgeting, reforecast, analysis and design work.
  • Assist with documentation and update of the modelling technical processes including updates to models and appropriate QAQC and documentation.

Safety Management

  • Demonstrate personal commitment in regard to safety and environmental and Social Responsibility practices.
  • Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with Company standards and procedures
  • Ensure hazard management plans are observed. 
  • Keep statutory and internal reporting as required.
  • Active participation to the Health & Safety Committee.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or similar.

Relevant experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in open pit mining within similar environment.
  • Proficient in the use of mine planning software including SURPAC, MineSight, DataMine, Whittle, Xpac.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, software preferably). 
  • High-level of knowledge of mine planning.
  • French language skills.
  • Experience in a developing country with a preference for West African experience.
  • Experience working in multicultural environment.
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and build effective relationships and networks.
  • Possesses strong training and mentoring skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to respond to a changing work environment.
