THE ROLE
The Earthworks Superintendent is responsible for supervising and coordinating all earthworks activities on a mine construction site, ensuring that excavation, bulk earthworks, haul road construction, tailings dam, and platform preparation are executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to design specifications. The role requires strong leadership, technical, and planning skills, with extensive experience in large-scale mining or infrastructure projects.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Key Responsibilities :
- Supervise and manage all earthworks operations, including clearing, grubbing, cut and fill, drainage, compaction, haul road and pad construction, and stockpile management.
- Plan and schedule daily and weekly activities in line with project timelines and production targets.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards as per mine site and statutory regulations.
- Coordinate with survey, engineering, and quality control teams to ensure design accuracy and work compliance.
- Monitor and manage earthmoving equipment performance, availability, and utilization; report maintenance requirements.
- Lead and mentor foremen, operators, and labor teams to maintain productivity and high safety performance.
- Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and other departments (e.g., drilling/blasting, civils, infrastructure).
- Review and verify daily production reports, quantities, and cost control data.
- Identify and mitigate risks that may affect earthworks progress or safety.
- Contribute to project planning by providing input on constructability, sequencing, and resourcing.
Key Duties :
- Implement and manage site safety plans and toolbox talks; monitor adherence to PPE and other safety protocols.
- Monitor and pace project schedules; adjust site workflows to prevent bottlenecks or delays.
- Verify quality of work, inspect installations, and ensure alignment with construction drawings, specifications, and standards.
- Log site data—manpower, equipment, material status—and escalate issues or change requests to management as necessary.
- Assist in cost tracking by identifying potential budget variances or deviations and facilitating change order documentation when needed.
- Verify material deliveries and ensure correct installation.
- Prepare daily reports of site progress, manpower, and equipment utilization.
- Support the Earthworks Manager with site-level coordination and issue resolution.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Relevant trade qualifications and experience.
- Civil Engineering degree or tertiary qualifications preferred.
Relevant experience:
- 10–15 years in heavy civil or mining earthworks infrastructure projects, in West Africa.
- Demonstrated experience managing mine infrastructure development projects e.g. haul roads, plant platforms, tailings storage facilities or open pit pre-strip.
- Proven exposure to Owner’s oversight: QA/QC, progress tracking, and handover documentation.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (French desirable).
- Experience in reporting progress and risks to senior management and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in project/construction management tools (MS Project, Primavera P6, Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships across contractors and consultants.
