The Role
Reporting to the E&I Coordinator, the Technical Specialist is primarily responsible for process plant engineering and maintenance programs of the site to optimize the safety and performance of all fixed plant to achieve optimal operational and production goals while ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures. The incumbent will also develop, coach and train a team of national maintenance technicians to ensure that all aspects of the surface fixed equipment runs as efficiently as possible by providing daily supervision of staff and training on all technical areas of the plant.
Key Responsibilities
General
- Leading, developing and mentoring a group of maintenance personnel to complete quality work safely and efficiently.
- Ensuring all maintenance works are completed in a safe manner and in compliance with established safe work procedures and systems.
- Identifying and organising resource required to complete maintenance works.
- Ensuring the maintenance plan in their area is efficiently carried out.
- Responding to and managing unscheduled maintenance work so that impact on the operation is minimised.
- Preparing a budget for maintenance works in the area of responsibility and then completing work in accordance with that budget.
Budget and Financial Support
- Work with the E&I Coordinator & E&I Supervisors to establish an operating budget.
- Ensure all charges remain within budget, report on cost variances and identify cost savings opportunities.
- Plan, approve and monitor any expenditure under your authority.
Compliance / Quality Control
- Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures, and standards.
- Consistently maintain a high quality of work within the maintenance team.
- Provide input regarding improvement opportunities and areas of risk.
- Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements (including Company Policy, Standards, and Procedures) through training and development of staff and promoting by example.
Staff Development
- Develop appropriate selection criteria for the positions within the E&I team.
- Ensure personnel have the appropriate equipment, licenses, skills, induction, and training to safely undertake their tasks.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.
- Promote and develop the skills of subordinates through the transfer of technology and skill development through on-the-job training programs.
- Conduct formal career development discussions with employees and identify development opportunities and programs that assist with defining future career progression possibilities.
- Encourage and facilitate effective and supportive communication between all team members and related departments.
Safety Management
- Demonstrate personal commitment regarding safety and environmental and Social Responsibility practices.
- Ensure every person within the team is fit for work.
- Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.
- Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with Company standards and procedures
- Ensure hazard management plans are observed.
- Keep statutory and internal reporting as required.
Key Requirements
Education
- Electrical or Instrumentation Trade Qualification or Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
Relevant Experience
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in electrical field with previous experience as Supervisor and minimum 5 years in mining sector with experience on HV, Electrical, Instrumentation, Control systems, substations, project work, power reticulation.
- French language skills desired not essential.
- Experience within the mining sector in Africa preferred.
- Working experience with Microsoft Excel & Word.
- Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and build effective relationships and networks.
- Possesses strong training and mentoring skills with the ability to develop an effective team.
- Demonstrates strong conceptual skills, and be capable of developing lateral and practical solutions.
- Ability to respond to a changing work environment.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time.
