Reporting to the Process Manager, the Processing Operations Superintendent is responsible for the leadership of the operations teams for both the Whole Ore Leach and Sulfide Treatment areas of the SMGO process plant. This includes crushing, milling, flotation, BIOX, leaching, elution, gold room, naturalization, services and tailings. The key objective of this position is to maintain a safe working environment while meeting processing production targets in compliance with all standards and statutory requirements.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead all operational activities of the processing facilities (crushing, milling, flotation, BIOX, leaching, elution, gold room, naturalization, services and tailings).
  • Act as the driver to achieve optimum performance to achieve production targets by guided by SMGO Key Performance Indicators.
  • Responsible for the overview of scheduling and allocation of staff and resources to ensure all production targets are achieved in an efficient and cost-effective manner...
  • Work with the Process Manager to support development of processing operating budgets and forecasts.
  • Plan, approve and monitor the operational expenditure.
  • Closely monitor the use of contractors to ensure that contractors are used in an optimal manner and only engaged when necessary...
  • Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards. Consistently maintain a high quality of work within the department and within the operations team.
  • Drive ICMC compliance by adhering to the international cyanide code practices, work closely with the internal cyanide code champions and group technical services team.
  • Provide input regarding improvement opportunities and drive a business improvement minded culture in the operational areas...
  • Provide direct management, mentoring and effective leadership to the site’s Process Operations team consisting, ensuring that team members receive training, support and resources to work effectively and safely.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.

Position requirements

  • Relevant Diploma or Degree in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing or related field or an equivalent combination of vocational training and work experience.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in senior operations supervisory roles, with 5 years working at superintendent level or above.
  • Operational experience in large scale gold processing plants, specific experience with sulphide treatment via flotation ultrafine grinding and leaching, experience with oxidative leaching, roasting and bio-oxidisation processes beneficial.
  • Capable of managing an operational team in large and complex processing plant.
  • Strong project management and planning skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budget and cost control.
  • High communication skills (verbal & written) being able to confidently present to internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working within the mining sector in Africa preferred.
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and build effective relationships and networks
  • Possesses strong training and mentoring skills with the ability to develop an effective team Demonstrates strong conceptual skills, and be capable of developing lateral and practical solutions Ability to build a strong rapport with all stakeholders
